Just @#$% it! What are they saying?

Normally, we would include something like this in the newsletter, but we're about to send it out to everyone, so we'll opt to place it on the blog.

It's amazing how a little sexual innuendo advertising video can enable visibility for IT sales. For Serena, its forte is business mashups, and the ability to create ones's own mashup with very little experience or knowledge. Serena introduced its "Just @#$% It! What are they saying" video at a Mashup Camp last month, and it's already had more than 1 million hits on YouTube.

What is interesting is that we know what the bleeped word is. It's "mash" as in mashup. So, this is actually a very tastefully done video. The irony, as noted in an Information Week article is that mashups have a dirty connotation in many IT organizations, as if web2.0 applications are bad for you. Hence, the joke. And it works. What also works is that Serena knows that all those symbols in the title will create a lot of hits on viral video sites. Nice advertising ploy.

It just goes to show what a little creativity, a handheld digital camera, and a few bucks can get you. And it can pay off. Witness the consumer-produced video for Swiffer. Swiffer won $15,000!

And who said that technology was boring?
