tHAWT Episode #41: Shifting Power Equation

In this episode, Paul, Adam, Trevor, and Mark got together on Groundhog Day (Vermont's PeeWee says 6 more weeks for us, now there is a surprise) and on the heels of Davos 2007 World Economic Forum to discuss the impact of Web 2.0, social networking, and user generated content. We have several links to topics we covered but for Paul, or anyone interested in virtual worlds, check out the first life site. If you have a Del.icio.us account, look for items tagged with "thawt" and you can see the items we were not able to cover. You can even suggest ones we should look at for future episodes.

Coincidently, in the news today was this article about being able to step in to one's favorite TV show... not just watching it, but to participate in it - virtually.

http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2007/02/04/v_as_in_virtual_why_just_watch_when_you_can_step_right_into_your_favorite_show/

The focus in the article was more on MTV and Nickelodeon's shows "Virtual Hills" and "Virtual Laguna Beach."  Okay, I'm older than the target market, but, you've got to believe that there is money in this, right?

For a small fee, you can have an avatar, hang out, meet old friends, find new ones...

It's been another busy week for news regarding "Second Life."  Information Week has a new well-done article regarding the implications for businesses within Second Life.

http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=197001839&pgno=1&queryText=

"Companies as varied as Toyota, Dell, Sears, and Adidas have all established bulkheads in the 3-D virtual world called "Second Life." Is this influx of brands an exciting precursor of how we'll be conducting business very soon, or the ultimate exercise in corporate flat-footedness?"

It's an interesting read, and it is worth noting (again) that this is not your average "web site" storefront we're talking about here.  It is definitely too soon to see the impact of virtual worlds, but for now, it's hear and there is real money involved. Stay tuned.

And for more on the story about Davos, Web 2.0 and the changing global economy, see the Michael Hugos article at CIO Magazine (http://blogs.cio.com/node/682?source=nlt_cioinsider) where he, too, talks about the impact of Web 2.0 on the global economy.

We discussed Second Life in the Feb 02 tHAWT as part of how Web 2.0 was impacting the global economy.
