What if the FCC decides to delay its vote on Nov 3 due to the close proximity of the mid-term elections? Could the sudden rush of air be the ballon bursting in Texas and Georgia if this happens? With a 2-2 split on the board, there is the possibility that the Dems seek to push the vote out beyond early November. That would then place a huge emphasis on the elections and hopes that the Dems do not turn over Congress as some think might happen. With a lame duck Congress in place, could this merger vote push into early 2007? I know these are a lot of if ands and buts, but if things align then it could be a long winter for ATT and BellSouth.

I think there are too many working for the merger and too few agin' it to stop it now.

Most likely, but a delay until the new Congress is sworn in would certainly not be a happy event (for AT&T and BST, not to mention us!).  The Democratic members of the FCC might also feel some concessions are in order for the merger to proceed...

I do not think it will take that long.  The concessions will most likely be on the wholesale side and not consumer.  There is already more than enough competition on that side.  This is a delay, but I do not think it will go as long as the swearing in of the new Congress.  Too much momentum has been built.  Look for an approval by mid-November.
