tHAWT Episode 11: Its not a truck its a series of tubes

In this issue we start with discussing the net neutrality debate again thanks to comments made by Senator Ted Stevens the chairman of the senate commerce committee. If you want the full audio of his statements go here. The link to Google’s reaction can be found here. AOL’s announcement that they are thinking about making their broadband access free, while still charging for their dial up access prompted some interesting discussion. Finally we had another look at wireless, in particular the impact WiMax may have,  if any, going forward.

There is a new video out from Adam Gaffin which helps to further explain what Senator Stevens meant by "the Internet is not a truck, it's a series of tubes."  You can check it out from this permalink.  http://www.networkworld.com/community/?q=node/6395

There are lots of well known marketing cliches.  One is "Give away the razors and sell the razor blades."  Another is "that people don't buy the drill, they buy the holes."

One more link for this net neutrality debtate.  There is a great analogy by Bob Frankston at http://www.frankston.com/Public/Default.aspx?zz=xcs&Script_name=%2Fdefault.aspx&name=Sidewalks

Bob takes a well written poke at the players in the whole net neutrality debate.  In a hypothetical planned community of the future, he takes a walk down a "vendor owned" sidewalk. Bob’s point is that the sidewalk (like the Internet) ought to be a public service.  That’s a model that seems to have worked well for others in similar situations.

Youtube continues to be an innovative source for topical videos. Follow the link to listen to DJ Ted Stevens Techno Remix. The pro-regukation side of the debate has done a great job in capturing the minds of the youtube crowd. The telcos definitely need to get better marketing to promote their side of the debate.
