tHAWT Episode 5: Net Neutrality

In this episode, Dave, Trevor and Todd delve deeply into the so-called "net neutrality" issue.  After a brief look at the disastrous Vonage IPO, Dave takes on the role of Big Bad Telco, Trevor channels Benevolent Google, and Todd gives voice to the confused consumer crying out for clarity as the mighty providers muddy the waters with their agenda-driven framing.

Who controls the Internet?  Who should?  Should we pay for higher levels of service?  We raise all these questions and more and, in some cases, even answer them.

Apparently, at least according to MyDD (http://mydd.com/story/2006/5/25/111250/999), HR5417 (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:HR05417:@@@L&summ2=m&a) was passed by the House Judiciary Committee last week. This bill allegedly "supports" Net Neutrality, and has bipartisan support.

The Sensenbrenner measure is unique in that it uses federal anti-trust laws to prevent service providers from discriminating against content or applications providers. This tact effectively bypasses the FCC. The debate on the House floor should be interesting.

This is the best tHAWT so far. The role-playing of the three primary interest groups really brings it alive.
