tHAWT Episode 4: IP Telephony

In this episode, Dave, Todd and Trevor discuss the various options for VoIP calling. They address some of the challenges faced by the traditional carriers from these low (sometimes zero) cost providers. Which raise the question of the value of a telephone call today? Issues raised by the expansion of the definition of telecommunications carrier to include broadband and VoIP carriers under the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) are explored. The session concludes with a lively discussion of VoIP as a part of a larger communications environment. Unified messaging is a natural expansion from telephony for VoIP, how is it used? What should we expect in the future? How do our children use the various communications channels?

This lively discussion raises some old and new issues. We hope you enjoy it.
